Abstract

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses the two enigmatic disease processes of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease [1]. These diseases continue to challenge and frustrate the surgeon, gastroenterologist, and, most importantly, the patient. The term IBD links these two conditions, which are related by common clinical symptoms and overlapping histological features of recurrent inflammation with an unknown etiology.
