Abstract The luminous material in clusters of galaxies falls primarily into two forms — the visible galaxies and the X-ray emitting intracluster medium. The hot intracluster medium is the major observed baryonic component of clusters with a mass equal to or greater than that of the stellar matter. In this paper we discuss changes in the efficiency of galaxy formation for different clusters and the origin of the intracluster medium.
