Abstract
I began writing this chapter shortly after the end of the Beijing Olympics. These games provided a riveting spectacle of extraordinary Chinese pageantry and organization, for me and for many people around the world. But they especially offered to literally billions of people an enthralling show of incredible athletic skill and competitive spirit.
