Abstract
It has been recognized for years that the severity and rate of progression of periodontitis can be affected by systemic disease and other systemic factors. HIV-related periodontitis, for example, is a systemic infection contributing to a more acute expression of periodontitis. Other factors that have been shown to affect the progression of periodontitis are diabetes mellitus and smoking.
