Abstract

The last decade has brought about a vast increase in our understanding of the physiological mechanisms of pain inhibition. Especially significant factors in this growth include the discovery of analgesia elicited by electrical stimulation of the medial brain stem, referred to as stimulation-produced analgesia (SPA), the identification of opiate binding sites in the central nervous system, and the subsequent discovery and synthesis of opioid peptides in the brain, the enkephalins and endorphins. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
