Abstract

Grind hardening represents a new process to surface strengthen structural parts. It is based on the induction of martensitic phase transformations in steels using the heat generated in grinding operations. This paper demonstrates the process fundamentals and decisive interrelations between input parameters and hardening results. Furthermore, the potentials of grind hardening as well as the actually remaining restrictions will be illustrated. To sum up it should be pointed out, that grind hardening can be considered as alternative to induction or laser hardening, which enables the integration of heat treatment into the production sequence at comparable results.
