Abstract

New Plymouth is a New Zealand town of around 70,000 people. Otherwise unremarkable, its Govett Brewster is one of the leading contemporary art galleries of the Asia-Pacific region. The gallery was the brainchild of a wealthy N e w Plymouth resident, Monica Brewster. Her financial generosity enabled the local council to create an exceptional space in the middle of the town that houses a stunningly innovative display of N e w Zealand and international contemporary art. The gallery's enthusiastic and creative Director, Gregory Burke, has established an International Arts Residency at the gallery, and is working on providing an outlet for emerging writers.
