Abstract

Ethanol is a promising alternative fuel which can be produced biologically from a variety of feedstock and waste. Lignocelluloses biomass (LB) is one of the most abundant biomass and non-food bio-feedstock used in bioethanol production. Apart from eliminating competition for food and feed, LB is more efficient and environmentally friendly. It has less farmland requirement and mixture of different crops and agricultural waste can be used. Bioconversion of LB to ethanol is significantly hindered by the structural and chemical complexity of biomass, which makes these materials a challenge to be used as feedstock for cellulosic ethanol production. This paper review the various processes involved in converting lignocelluloses feedstock to bioethanol. Recent pretreatment methods as well as hydrolysis and the fermentation processes have been extensively reviewed and
