Abstract
Accurate light-scattering measurements have been performed in the isotropic phase of liquid crystals near both isotropic-nematic and isotropic-smectic A phase transitions. Everywhere deviations from the predictions of the Landau-de Gennes theory were found. Moreover these deviations are definitely depending upon the existence of the smectic phase and are the most stressing near the isotropic-nematic-smectic A triple point.
