Abstract

3 men underwent operations to restore fertility after having undergone bilateral vasectomies. In the 1st case the patient underwent a bilateral vasovasostomy 23 years after the vasectomy. Sperm production was 24 million/ml 40% of which were morphologically normal 4 weeks after the operation. In the 2nd case a man underwent a vasovasostomy and an epididymovasostomy 16 years after the vasectomy. 4 weeks after the operation the sperm count was 1 million/ml 40% mobile. The 3rd man underwent bilateral vasovasostomy 9 years after the vasectomy and was azoospermatic 3 weeks after the operation. Men who undergo vasectomies often develop autoimmunization antibodies against sperm which may reduce the chances for refertilization. After free sterilization was made legal on January 1 1976 the Swedish Board of Health and Welfare declared the operation irreversible. This may not be so and procedures should be developed to make the operation reversible since an increased number of men will undergo sterilization in Sweden as a result of the new law.
