Abstract
Drainage has considerably developed in France starting at the end of the 70's, with the development rate going from 20 000 ha in 1972 to 130 000 ha in 1982, and staying almost even since then. Furthermore, the realizations, which were mainly located in the Center and North-East of France at the beginning, have shifted toward the West; in other regions, it is the difficult soils and/or farms which are weak from an economic point of view that have expressed some drainage needs. The organization of preliminary studies has thus been stressed. The evaluation of the area and spatial distribution of drainage needs on the one hand, and the economic evaluation of water excess consequences in farms on the other hand, are performed by city juries which include farmers, local officials and technicians. This zoning of hydromorphic soils is completed by reference sectors, in order to obtain the data necessary to the design of future installations.
