Abstract
Enquiries which have investigated the associations of neuropathological changes in Alzheimer's disease with biochemical deficits in the cerebral cortex are reviewed The highest correlations of structural changes have been found with those transmitters that suffer the most severe deficits. Plaque and tangle counts prove most highly and consistently correlated with neurochemical indices, but there are some significant associations between neuronal counts and changes in neurotransmitters.
