Abstract
Somatic hybridization, involving protoplast fusion, is a well-established procedure for overcoming interspecific and intergeneric sexual incompatibilities between plants. Chemical fusion and/or electrofusion of isolated protoplasts present few difficulties. However, the success of somatic hybridization depends, primarily, on an ability to select heterokaryons from homokaryons and unfused protoplasts soon after fusion treatment, or to select heterokaryon-derived cells from which hybrid plants can be regenerated.
