Abstract
Myelotoxicity is the dose-limiting factor in the administration of chemotherapy, and septicaemia occurring during periods of treatment-induced neutropenia is a serious and potentially fatal iatrogenic complication. The current use of haematopoietic growth factors offers hope of amelioration of this situation and facilitation of a safer and easier passage through treatment for many patients. This article examines the sites of action of growth factors, their side-effects and potential uses. It also considers the practical issues regarding administration, the benefits to patient care and the overall impact on nursing care.
