Status of Library Use Pattern Among Undergraduate Students of Assam University Silchar: A Survey

Library is considered an integral component of any efficient education system. It plays an important role in the improvement of the organisation. This study was conducted on the status of Library Use Pattern among the Undergraduate Students of Assam University Silchar in order to know the trends of library usages pattern and to understand the information seeking pattern. In respect of type of material, sources and the services used by the Undergraduate students. It also assesses the extent of student's satisfaction regarding collection, timings and library staff cooperation in finding the information.The present study has been undertaken with a view to assess the availability of various resources and services in Rabindra Library and to find out the extent of use of these resources by the Undergraduate Students. For that a survey has been conducted using a well designed questionnaire which was circulated randomly among 140 respondents. On the basis of filled up questionnaires the data has been analyzed and inferences were made based on standard statistical techniques. Suggestions and recommendations were made on the basis of responses and opinions received from the respondents.The study was conducted during a small petted covering from January 2012 to April 2012. Analysis of the responses received from Undergraduate students revealed that students were visiting libraries frequently to meet their information needs for academic purpose. The study reveals that majority of the respondents use mainly the available printed resources. It is observed from the study that the major problems encountered by the users toward access to e-resources ate frequent power failure, problem in internet connectivity and lack of training. The library should be introduced the open access system for its users population. It is suggested that no sufficient books in library, so we need some more books. Internet and automated library services may be given to users of the library. Study brought forward the need to create awareness among users about importance of libraries in education and society.
