Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to determine the extent to which American Catholic newspapers judge temporal affairs, and the spiritual and political grounds for the judgements. Where the earlier inquiries dealt with numerous issues of the seven newspapers, the present study analyzed every editorial in two successive issues of every Catholic newspaper in the United States.
