Abstract
Negative effects of speed on road safety are today recognized and taken into account, for example by the means of speed limits. Then it seems necessary to revise the use of speed in the road design. The central concept of design speed is discussed. Its place in design standards should be reduced. But the effective speeds, used by the drivers, resulting from geometric design should be more systematically considered for a control of the design safety. Finally, possibilities of a road design that would be more favorable to the speed moderation are discussed.
