Abstract
The biosynthesis of thromboxanes from arachidonic acid involves 2 enzymes prostaglandin (PG) endoperoxide synthase (cyclooxygenase) which converts arachidonic acid to PGH2 and thromboxane synthase which isomerizes PGH2 to thromboxane A2. This chapter discusses thromboxane synthase. Topics include: 1) resolution of thromboxane synthesizing enzymes; 2) inhibitors of thromboxane synthase; 3) formation of C-17 acids from PG endoperoxides; 4) structural requirements for thromboxane synthase; and 5) conversion of PGG2.
