Abstract
Osmotic shock-induced hemolysis of red cells for the fresh and preserved blood was examined in order to determine the red cell sensitivity to hemolysis in relation to hemoglobin status. The obtained hemolysis curves suggest that hemolysis depends on the red cell hemoglobin status: a more oxidized hemoglobin is associated with an earlier onset of hemolysis. A protective effect of methylene blue with glucose on hemolysis was revealed. Basing on these data, the authors conclude that red cell sensitivity to hemolysis depends on the degree of hemoglobin oxidation.
