Treatment of Intractable Ulcerative Colitis

When a patient with intractable ulcerative colitis is not benefited by medical therapy, ileostomy and simultaneous colectomy are indicated. There is rarely, if ever, an indication for ileostomy alone. Unsuccessful medical therapy should be discontinued in intractable ulcerative colitis when the patient is not benefited; ileostomy and simultaneous colectomy should be instituted.
