(Abstracted from Crit Care Med, 43:1846–1852, 2015) Delirium and disturbances in attention are regulated in part by cholinergic neurotransmitter systems. It is thus thought that use of a medication with anticholinergic properties may potentially contribute to delirium occurrence in critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU).
