Following the outbreak of war in the South-West Pacific, North Queensland became an important military centre, as large numbers of troops were concentrated there prior to their departure for the forward areas.The main body of troops was quartered on the Atherton Table -land and was supplied through the ports of Townsville and Cairns.This involved the establishment of large numbers of men in and around these cities.
