Abstract

Pituitary regulation of endocrine response to changing homeostatic needs is itself regulated by the hypothalamus, which serves as a relay and integrating center for many types of stimuli reaching the CNS. Hypothalamic neurosecretory cells produce substances that cause the release and/or synthesis of the pituitary hormones. These substances reach the pituitary via portal veins draining the hypothalamic median eminence area.
