Abstract

Summary A simple method of estimating the glomerular filtration rate using a single injection of 51 Cr‐EDTA is described. The technique, which avoids urine collections, has been found to correlate well with the 24 hour endogenous creatinine clearance over a wide range of renal function. The complex is not attached to erythrocytes or significantly bound to plasma proteins. In non‐oedematous patients equilibration in the body space is completed in under 2 hours, following which an exponential fall in plasma activity occurs.
