Abstract
This article discusses news as a social phenomena. In order to understand different interpretations of events in news one should not only consider whether a news item meets general criteria such as objectivity, fairness and neutrality, but also look at the several screens on a cultural, legal, political, technical and commercial nature that the production and reception of news goes through. The author discusses this process with reference to the reporting of the Gulf War in the US and Pakistan media and the news selection criteria in African and Asian countries.
