Abstract
Objective To study the expression of basic fibroblast growth factor(bFGF) in the hippocampus of epileptic pedo-rats at different time points and investigate its bearing on epilepsy. Methods Forty-two 14-day old SD pedo-rats were randomly divided into two groups: A(epilepsy model group) and B(normal saline group).Pentetrazole was used to induce seizure models. The expression of bFGF in the hippocampus of rats was studied by immunofluorescent labeling technique.H-E staining was done for pathomorphological study. Results In group A,neuronal degeneration and necrosis in the hippocampus, and cellular proliferation of glial cells as well, were noticed;the expression of bFGF was increased, most marked 1 day after seizure(P0.01),continued to be higher for 7 days(P0.05),and then declined and approached the control level 14 days later(P0.05).Conclusion The expression of bFGF in hippocampus of 14-day rat is increased after acute epilepsy, significantly higher for 7 days after seizure.bFGF may play an important role in the self-plerosis after brain injury induced by epilepsy in pedo-rats.
