Abstract

A fiber optic sensing system for measurement of surrounding medium refractive index based on fiber Bragg grating Evanescent wave technology is presented in this paper. The theoretical analysis results indicate that the smaller grating cladding diameter, the larger the influence of environment refractive index change on Bragg wavelength drift. The fabrication process, which relies on Hydrofluoric acid(HF)etching of the fiber-Bragg-grating cladding,is applied to make different cladding diameter fiber Bragg gratings(FBG).The results show that at the same environment refractive index change, the smaller grating cladding diameter, the higher the sensitivity of a sensor, which is in agreement with the theoretical analysis..
