On conversational implicature from an analysis of the violation of Cooperative Principle

Grice's conversational implicature focuses its discussion on the cooperative principle which is supposed to be the basis of any successful communication. Yet on many occasions, the speaker would not follow but violate the maxims for one reason or another. When this happens, the listener should perceive the difference between what the speaker says and what he means by what he says, the particular meaning deduced for the latter being implicature. The present paper analyses the inference and application of coversational implicature in verbal communication from the two channels of speaker and listener according to the four maxims of cooperative principle. It is pointed out that a knowledge of coversational implicature and cooperative principle is of great signifcance to the correct language expressing and understanding.
