Abstract
The results of the investigation on sludge treatment systems over 400 municipal wastewater treatment plants in China show that only about 46 plants have sludge anaerobic digestion systems, most of which adopt thickening/mesophilic anaerobic digestion/dewatering process.About half of the plants have one-stage anaerobic digestion systems and the other half have two-stage anaerobic digestion systems. For the 46 plants, only 25 plants operate their anaerobic digestion systems and produce about 14×104 m3 biogas/d,the other 6 plants commission their systems. There are some urgent problems for the sludge anaerobic digestion. The low biogas yield and utilization rate counteract some advantages of the sludge anaerobic digestion.
