Effect of prestorage Gamma radiation on the cytokine levels in stored platelet concentrates

Abstract

Objective:To study the effect of prestorage Gamma radiation on the cytokine levels in platelet concentrates storage.Methods:Platelet concentrates prepared by the apheresis platelet (AP) methods were irradiated by Gamma ray at 25 Gy, then stored at standard condition for 5 days. Cytokine levels were measured by ELISA at various storage time. Results :The contents of all cytokines in platelet concentrates of control group after 3 days storage were significantly different from those prestorage ( P 0.05). The content of all cytokines except IL-8 in platelet concentrates of irradiated group showed no significant changes after 3 days storage ( P 0.05). But after 5 days storage, the content of all cytokine were much higher than those prestorage( P 0.05).Conclusion:Gamma radiation is effective in preventing the generation of cytokines in the storage of platelet concentrates. Thus Gamma radiation at 25 Gy could prevent non-hemolytic febrile reaction after platelet concentrates transfusion.
