Abstract
Four goats with permanent rumen fistulae were used by a 4 × 4 latin square design to investigate the effect of malate(5 g、10 g、15 g) on the dynamics of rumen VFA concentrations in goats.The results showed that the pH of 10g and 15g treatments were always higher than 6.0 and were 0.16~0.27 and 0.19~0.41 higher than that of the control in 0h to 12 h respectively.The propionate concentration of 10g and 15 g treatments were higher than that of the control in 12h.The propionate concentration of 10g and 15g treatments were 22%(P0.05) and 23%(P0.05) higher than the control at 4h respectively.The propionate percentage of 10g and 15g treatments were 21%~56% and 22%~61% higher than that of the control in 12 hours,respectively.The acetate to propionate ratio of 10g and 15g treatments were 21%~41% and 21%~43% lower than that of the control in 12 hours respectively.The results showed that malate reduced the ratio to acetate to propionate in rumen and changed rumen fermentation type.
