Abstract

Wen Xin Diao Long(The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons)is not a work on literary history in the modern sense;however,it has an apparent historical characteristic, with particular reference to the sections entitled 'Bian Sao'(Meta-criticism of variety of articles)and 'Quan Fu'(Interpretation on Descriptive Prose Interspersed with Verse).LIU Xie did not intend to write a work on literary history;he is in fact exploring the natures of various literary styles and the writing norms, which has naturally led to the division of literary history into alternative subfields, and hence delineated the historical lines of each subfield in the historical advances arising from the contact between literary stylistics and creative theories. This strategy differs from the modern narrative ones and fuses literary theory, literary criticism, and literary history into an organic whole, which is inspiring and worth following.
