Abstract

A pilot scale study on treatment of effluent water from a chemical industry wastewater treatment plant by biological aerated filter(BAF) process was carried out,the influences of the starting and the operation parameters of BAF on treatment effect were mainly investigated. The results showed that:at the wastewater temperature of 10-19 ℃,with the activated sludge covering the aeration for the inoculation, the biofilm was formed successfully after 30 days. When the influent flow of the BAF was 4 m3/h,the filter material height was 2.0 m,the hydraulic loading was 2-3 m3/(m2·h),the volume rate of gas to water was 3:1,the removal rates of COD and SS in effluent water reached 74.2% and 92.7% respectively. The said process was efficient and the quality of the effluent treated by it was stable, which could meet the requirement for cooling water.
