Clinical Symptoms and Subtypes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Objective To investigate the abdominal symptom,defecation symptoms,stool characteristics and subtypes of patients with irritable bowel syndrome( IBS). Methods Patients diagnosed as having IBS during January2010 and January 2013 in gastroenterology department were selected,and the patients were guided to fill in self-designed questionnaires and Bristol stool types questionnaires. General situations,abdominal symptoms,defecation symptoms,stool characteristics and subtypes of patients with IBS were statistically analyzed. Results A total of 3242 patients with IBS were involved in this study,and the ratio of male and female was 1 ︰ 1. 58; the 41-50 age group had the highest prevalence rate( 29. 73%). The percentages of abdominal pain,abdominal discomfort and abdominal pain combined with abdominal discomfort were 89. 02%,86. 92% and 75. 94%. Abnormal stool was observed in 92. 20% of IBS patients,in which the higher percentages were film or paste( 51. 33%) and dry-bulb-like stools( 40. 72%). The highest ratio of IBS was diarrhea type( 40. 83%). Conclusion The 41-50 female age group has a higher prevalence. Common symptoms are abdominal pain and abdominal discomfort,and most of the patients with IBS have abnormal stools,and the most common subtype is diarrhea type.
