Abstract
According to A Dictionary of Chinese Words and A Dictionary of Chinese Characters, the word 擐 is pronounced huan with the meaning of running through, linking up.However, based on the explanation in Origin of Chinese Characters, the studies in classic works, and testimony of Hefei dialect,it is argued that 擐 was originally pronounced guan, and must be the original word of 挎(carry on one's arm) in modern Chinese.Besides,擐 in the pronunciation of juǎn means tie, fasten. Thus, based on the analysis of the origin and development of its meaning, proof in classic works, and Hefei dialect,it is proposed that should be read guǎn,and defined as wrap, tie, and button up.
