Abstract

Objective To study the clinical significance of diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose regulation in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease. Methods A Total of 656 inpatients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease were selected for determination of fasting plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin. They were divided into diabetic (n=272), impaired glucose regulation (n=173), and normal plasma glucose (n=211) groups. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was conduced in those who had not been diagnosed as diabetes previously, and their fasting plasma glucose were 5.6-6.9 mmol/L . The American Diabetes Association recommended criteria(2003)for glycometabolic categorization were used. Results The diagnostic rate of diabetes in 656 patients before admission was 17.1%, and after systemic examination in the hospital found that the prevalence of diabetes was 41.5%, and impaired glucose regulation was 26.4%. Among the 279 patients with fasting plasma glucose 5.6-6.9 mmol/L , OGTT found that 25.4% of the patients could be diagnosed as diabetes, and impaired glucose regulation was 40.9%. The fasting plasma glucose levels in the diabetes, impaired glucose regulation, and normal glucose groups were 8.5±2.4, 5.6±0.8 and 4.5±0.7mmol/L respectively. Their glycosylated hemoglobin levels were 7.5±2.2, 5.4±0.7 and 4.3±0.4%, respectively. Conclusion Patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease may complicate with diabetes or impaired glucose regulation. The patients whose fasting plasma glucose levels are 5.6-6.9 mmol/L should have their OGTT examination routinely, so as to screen the patients with diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance.
