Abstract
A shortened address for the Commanding Governor of the Banishing Camp,the Governor of the Banishing Camp appeared first in the late Tang Dynasty.It rose to an important military position in time of the Five Dynasties,which was carried on in the Song Dynasty.The powers of the governor of the banishing camp varied in different periods of time according the evolution of the functions of banishing camps.In the Tang and the early Five Dynasties,the governor was responsible for defence and field battle as an important military commander,but in the Later Jin and the Five Dynasties,the camp of the banishing camp was,among other thing,a place to administer criminalas in imprisonment and exile.To reinforce the central despotism,the rulers of the Song Dynasty took back the authorization of the governor of the banishing camp and reorganized the troops of banishing camps into one of the auxiliaries.As a consequence,the fighting capacity of troops of banishing camps was made to steadily weaken and the position of the banishing camp to decline accordingly.Finally,the governor of the banishing camp became a local judiciary official to administer criminals in improsonment and exile.
