Self-tuning of PID Parameters Based on Particle Swarm Optimization

Abstract

The performance of PID controller completely depends on the parameter tuning and optimization,which are difficult problems for general PID controller.Based on the characteristic of particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm which searches the parameter space concurrently and efficiently,a novel design method for determining the optimal PID controller parameters using the particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm is presented in this paper.A new performance criterion function is also defined to estimate the performance of the PID controller.Using the second-order ship control system as studying object,PSO algorithm is used to search optimal parameter of PID controller.The simulation results indicate that the control performance of the PID based on PSO is better than that of the general PID parameters tuning methods and possesses certain engineering value.
