Abstract

The methods to eliminate or reduce the interferences for the determination of volatile phenols in drinking water are discussed in this paper. The interferences are relevant to the sample pretreatment, the blank value, the sensitivity and the relative coefficient of calibration curve, etc. It is proposed that the major interferences can be eliminated in sample pretreatment as follows:Oxidizing agents are removed imme- diately after sampling by adding excess FeSO_4;NaOH is used for the storage; And the sample distillation is well-treated if it changes unusu- ally.It is also proposed that the blank value can be decreased by using the puritied 4-aminoantipyrine(4-AAP)and the distilled water free of phenols;the extreme sensitivity can he attained with the well-prepared 4-AAP solution, the accurate stock phenol solution. And the rela- tive coefficient of the curve can be promoted with the qualified separatory funnels and the right procedure, etc. These methods make good ef- fect.
