Abstract

Serial sections of the extrinsic eye muscles of the macaque monkey, rat, chicken, gutter-bird,and frog were stained with Glees' silver impregnation for the study of nerve endings. Some of them were counter-stained with Mallory method. The simple muscle spindle and the spiral nerve ending were found only in the ex- trinsic eye muscles of the macaque monkey.Ball or ring like terminations were found to be subbranches of the nerve fiber forming the spiral nerve ending. The simple grape-like nerve endings were found in the muscular fiber of all the animals studied except in that of the frog. The free nerve ending and the sensory spool were found also. The end-plate of the extrinsic eye muscle has the characteristic of its kind. The functional significance of these nerve endings of the extrinsic eye muscle needs further study.
