Abstract
Objective:To reduce side effects of mannitol in dehydration therapy, current study explored the alternative use of mannitol and hypertonic saline in ischemic cerebral infarction. Methods:Patients with ischemic cerebral infarction were divided into experimental and control group. The experimental group was treated with alternative use of mannitol and hypertonic saline, while the control group was given only mannitol continuously. The neurological score, plasma eletrolytes and renal function were evaluated and compared between the two groups before and after the treatment. Results:After 14 d of dehydration therapy, the neurological score in both groups were significantly improved,it was slightly higher in the experimental group but no significant difference was observed between the two groups(P0.05).The plasma concentration of Na+,Cl-,K+,Ca ++ did not change significantly during the treatment in both groups. The plasmic creatinine and urea nitrogen progressively increased in control group, but only slight increase was observed in the experimental group showing significant difference on the 5th day and 10th day of treatment(P0.01).Conclusions:The alternative use of mannitol and hypertonic saline shows satisfactory dehydration effects in isehemic cerebral infarction leading to less side effects than use of mannitol alone.
