Abstract
Management inefficiency and object mismatching are two major drawbacks of conventional SNMP/CORBA gateway-based distributed network management systems. The paper describes a new CORBA-based distributed network management architecture, DiNM/CORBA, which seamlessly integrates the SNMP-based network management with the CORBA distributed computing environment through Java and JMAPI technology. By doing so, the service objects in the CORBA environment are able to directly access the managed objects within the SNMP agent, so there is no need for dynamic protocol translation during management operation. The paper describes the DiNM/CORBA architecture, while focusing on the design and implementation of its basic services of data collection and event management. Compared with a conventional SNMP management environment, the DiNM/CORBA performance is about 20% higher than that of a typical SNMP/CORBA gateway approach.
