Comparison of the Effect of Telmisartan and Ramipril in Essential Hypertension

Abstract

Objective To compare telmisartan(40mg/d) with ramipril(2.5mg/d) with respect to antihypertensive efficacy and safety in patients with mild to moderate hypertension. Methods 46 patients with mean sitting diastolic blood pressure above 90mmHg were randomly divided into two groups: telmisartan(40mg/d) group and ramipril(2.5mg/d) group. After 8 weeks, compare the change in mean sitting systolic blood pressure, mean sitting diastolic blood pressure and the total effective rate and observe the adverse reaction. Results Both groups could lower the mean sitting systolic/diastolic blood pressure with (20.4±6.6)mmHg/(15.6±2.7)mmHg and(16.9±7.2)mmHg/(11.8±4.1)mmHg,respectively,there was significant difference between the two groups. The total effective rates of two groups in lowering blood pressure were 82.6% and 69.6%, respectively. The incidence rate of dry cough was higher in ramipirl group than in telmisartan group. Conclusion Both telmisartan(40mg/d) and ramipril(2.5mg/d) can effectively lower blood pressure in mild to moderate hypertension patients, but telmisartan is more effective with better tolerance.
