Differentiation and Authentication of Saponin Extracts from Panax ginseng, Panax quinquefolius and Panax notoginseng by HPLC/ESI-MSn

Abstract

OBJECTIVE To investigate the constituents of saponin extracts from Panax ginseng,Panax notoginseng and Panax quinquefolius by HPLC/ESI-MSn.METHODS By the studies of MS_2 spectra and by comparison with those of reference compounds and literature data,the major constituents in each extract were identified. RESULTS A total of 32 ginsenosides were identified.Comparing the compositions of different saponin extracts,the mark ginsenosides of each extract were chosen for the differentiation and authentication of saponin extracts from Panax ginseng,Panax quinquefolius and Panax notoginseng,respectively.CONCLUSION HPLC/ESI-MSn is a very efficient and practical technique for differentiating and authenticating the saponin extracts from Panax ginseng,Panax notoginseng and Panax quinquefolius.
