Abstract

Objective TO evaluate effect of radiotherapy plus chemotherapy in advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods From March 1993 to March 1996,188 patients in Ⅲ?Ⅳa stage were divided randomly into two groups.Radiotherapy group (94 cases) was only treated by cobalt 60 or linear accelerator with D T68~76GY/7 7.5w in nasopharynx and D T50~70GY/5 7w in the neck.Chemo radiotherapy therapy group(94 cases) received chemotherapy with PDD+5 Fu before radiotherapy and after rediotherapy. Results The 3?5 year survival rates were 68.1%?55.5% in chemotherapy plus radiotherapy group and 54.2%?37.2% in radiotherapy group;Distant metastasis rates were 35.1% in chemotherapy plus radiotherapy group and 47.5% in radiotherapy group respectively with significant difference between the two groups (P0.05) .Conclusion Radiotherapy plus chemotherapy can increase the survival rates and decrease distant metastasis rates for advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
