Abstract

Recent advances on genetic diversity of cotton were reviewed from pedigree analysis, morphological characters, biochemistry markers and DNA molecular markers, respectively. Low intraspecific genetic diversity was found in Gossypium hirsutum L. across countries and should be paid much more attention to. Strategies improving genetic diversity of newly developed cotton varieties include further study and utilization of available germplasm including wild types, focus on germplasm introduction and exchanges between countries and breeding teams, integration of multiple techniques in breeding programs and guide of multiple breeding purposes. Studies on core germplasm and genetic diversity of cotton at genomic level should be strengthened in the future.
