Abstract

TANG Ting-shu(1832-1892),modern famous comprador and enterpreur and an important official dealing with Westernization movement.During the period of 1863-1873,TANG was a comprador and acted dual character of his official business.On one hand he tried to do Chinese business in the foreign banks and promoted British economic invasion,thus showed his comprador nature;on the other,however,as asenior working manwho worked in the foreign banks,the untrusted and insulted cling to him.TANG as a Chinese was aware that Chinese should own its one ship business promotion department in deal business of navigation and thus expressed his strong nationalism.
