A comparative study of risperidone and haloperidol in the treatment of manic episodes of bipolar disorder

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of risperidone and haloperidol in treating manic epi- sodes of bipolar disorder.Methods A total of 82 patients were randomly divided into two groups treated with risperidone(n=40)or haloperidol(n=42).The patients were evaluated with the Bech-Rafaelsen Mania Rating Scale,TESS,RSESE before treatment and on 1st,2nd and 4th weekend after treatment.Results The clinical re- sponse rates were 82.5% in risperidone group and 80.9% in haloperidol group.There was significantly lower rate of extrapyramidal symptoms in risperidone group(40%)than that in haloperidol group(57%).Conclusion Risperidone has similar therapeutic effect to haloperidol in the treatment of manic episodes,but risperidone has better tolerability.
