Comparison of ultrasonic and magnetic resonance imaging examination with pathological tests

Abstract

Objective To combine with histopathology to explore the value of diagnosing breast cancer by ultrasound and MRI.Methods A total of 74 cases with breast cancer(97 focuses)and 70 cases with benign tumor(75 focuses)were retrospectively analysed with the dates of ultrasound and MRI before operation,which has confirmed by the surgery or histopathology.The efficiency of diagnosis for the two methods and joint application were compared with the results of histopathology.Results The diagnosis sensitivity of breast cancer by ultrasound,MRI and the combined method of ultrasound and MRI were 76.3%,82.5% and 87.6%,respectively.The specificities of were 92.0%,88.0% and 96.0%,respectively.The consistency rates were 83.1%,84.9% and 91.3%,respectively without any statistically significant difference(P0.05).For breast ductal carcinoma in situ(DCIS)and papillary carcinoma,ultrasound and MRI relatively tended to misdiagnosis.Moreover,ultrasonic examination was more sensitive than MRI in apocrine carcinoma.Conclusions Ultrasound and MRI are of high sensitivity and specificity in diagnosis of breast cancer,and the combined method can effectively improve consistency rate.The combined ultrasonic with MRI can be used in the monitoring of high-risk breast cancer,decreasing the rate of misdiagnosis.Early discovery and early diagnosis of breast cancer could be obtained,which is of great value in clinical treatment and prognosis evaluation.
