Abstract
The use of yeast for high strength organic wastewater treatment is reviewed in this article. As a biological wastewater treatment technology, yeast treatment has some advantages over the conventional biological technologies. It allows a BOD load as high as 8 to 10 times that of the activated sludge process, and has been successfully used for treating various food production wastewaters, such as oil manufacturing wastewater containing high concentration of oil. The yeast technology also showed promising performance in treating glutaminate production wastewater which contained ammonium ions as high as over 18000mg/L.
